Chapter Nine
She sat up, clutching the covers to her chest. âWhat are you doing here?â
âYou texted me.â
âI did not.â
âYou said that you wanted chicken soup.â He held up the plastic container in his hand. âChicken soup.â
She closed her eyes on a moan. âI thought I was texting Chelsea.â
âI figured.â He put the soup on her bedside table, beside the thermometer and empty ginger ale can. âWhen was the last time you took your temperature?â
She pushed her hair away from her face. âSometime last night.â
âWhat was it?â
âOne-oh-two.â
He touched the back of his hand to her forehead. âYou still feel warm.â
She pulled away from his touch. âAnd sweaty. I think I should have a shower before I have that soup.â
âCan you manage on your own?â
âYouâre not really offering to help me?â
He chuckled softly. âI could ask Mrs. Hanson to come over and give you a hand.â
âDid she let you into the building again?â
âYeah, I buzzed her because I didnât want to disturb you if you were sleeping. She said she suspected you might be sick when you came home from work early yesterday.â
Allison sighed. âWho needs a security system when thereâs Mrs. Hanson across the hall?â
âSo do you want some help with that shower?â
âI think I can manage.â
âLeave the door unlocked,â he suggested. âI donât want to have to break it down if you fall over in the tub.â
âIâm not going to fall over,â she said, but she appreciated his consideration. If he truly was being considerate and didnât think he could use an unlocked door as an opportunity to peek at her while she was in the shower.
An idea that didnât seem completely out of the realm of possibility until she got a look at herself in the mirror and actually let out a shriek. The startled sound was still hanging in the air when Nate pushed through the door.
âWhat is it? What happened?â
She shook her head, and reached for the counter when the ground tilted beneath her feet. âNothing.â
He took a step closer, obviously concerned. âThen why did you scream?â
She felt ridiculous admitting the truth to himâand ridiculously vain. But she took it as a positive sign that she actually cared about her appearance today. Twenty-four hours earlier, sheâd just wanted to curl up in a ball and pull the blankets over her head.
âAlli?â he prompted.
âI looked in the mirror,â she finally confessed.
Somehow, he managed a smile. âItâs not one of your best days,â he acknowledged, âbut you really donât look that bad.â
âAm I dying?â
âWhat?â
âItâs the only reason I can think of to explain why youâre being so nice to me.â
âMaybe Iâm a nice guy.â
âMaybe you are,â she allowed.
âAre you still planning to take a shower?â
âI think weâll both feel better if I do.â
âJust give a shout if you want me to wash your back.â
She shoved him toward the door.

Upon receipt of Alliâs text message asking for chicken soup, Nate had immediately realized that sheâd sent it to him in error.
He could have called Chelsea and told her about the message.
